Small Sailing Boats Off Goderich:

Colour Plate: “Fishing From Small Sailboats”, 1982, Watercolour by Charles Peterson from the Bamford Collection

Fishing from small sailboats was a common means of livelihood out on the lakes in the mid-1800s to the close of the nineteenth century. Featured in the centre is a Collingwood skiff. Behind her is a Mackinaw, and to the right is a Huron boat. Far over to the left is a three-masted Huron boat, the Belle Jean Ann of Goderich. The last known commercial sail fishing boat was the Helen Macleod II of Bayfield.

Come Celebrate the Sinking
of the Goderich Marine Heritage Dive Vessel
‘The Maitland Star’

Flotilla will congregate outside the commercial harbour entrance starting at 12:30 pm, then follow the lead boat, ‘Pieces of Eight’ through the main break walls into the Goderich Harbour and past the newly named ‘Maitland Star’. There will be a ceremony including, a Blessing, the Christening and very short speeches…..watch for details in Goderich Signal Star. For those boaters wanting to accompany the Maitland Star to its final resting spot, weather permitting, you will need to congregate outside the harbour after the ceremony then follow the MacDonald Marine Tugboat, which will be towing the vessel to the site off Black’s Point. We encourage those participating in this event to decorate….We expect a large delegation of media, so put your best face..…All boats will communicate on Channel 72 with lead boat ‘Pieces of Eight’ co-ordinating the Sail Past. Come join the Goderich Marine Heritage Committee, The Town of Goderich and all supporters of the Dive Industry in celebrating this Maritime Event.
Ontario's newest Scuba Diving site, the Artificial Shipwreck "Maitland Star" will be created Saturday Sept. 2; 6 nautical miles south west of Goderich. The day will start at 1:00pm with a Sail Past at the Goderich south harbour pier Pavilion where the Maitland Star will be Christened and Blessed. After the short ceremony she will be towed to the new dive site and ceremoniously sank (weather permitting of course).
